Artist in Residence 2001 Lothar Nickel ~ Striding

Lothar Nickel spent the summer of 2000 in Pietrasanta, Italy, where he chose a 1.5 ton piece of Carrara statuario marble for the Coral Springs Museum of Art, to create his piece while he was the Museum’s Artist in Residence from January 13 until March 31, 2001. Striding is the first piece commissioned for the Museum’s nascent collection, and will be on permanent display in the Main Gallery of the Museum.

Museum visitors were invited to watch the whole working process of stone carving, from the rough block to the finished sculpture. Children learned about the stone carvers of Italy and and carried home with them small chips from the block. It was an exciting several weeks to watch the creative process in progress.

Born in Düsseldorf, Germany, Lothar Nickel was introduced to stone carving during a trip to the west coast of Scotland. His medium of choice is light-colored marble. Nickel maintains residences in Boca Raton, Burghaun-Langenschwartz, Germany and Pietrasanta, Italy, where he also has a studio.

The artist holds a Diploma in Sculpture and Fine Arts from the Alnus Scholl of Art, Bonn, and he was the winner of the 2000 Rhoen Salon Exhibit in Kunststation Kleinsassen. He has exhibited extensively throughout Europe and the United States and has work in private and public collections in Germany, Italy and Florida.
